Akhtar Hussein Qutubuldin Ahmed, the Indian businessman arrested
in Dubai on charges of peddling nuclear secrets, was deported to India late on
Saturday night. He is being held in Mumbai and questioned by officials of
central intelligence agencies. But security agencies in New Delhi are taking
the case with a "pinch of salt", saying it appears to be "bogus". According to
preliminary enquiries by the Research and Analysis Wing and the Intelligence
Bureau (IB), the man's name is Akhtar Hussein and not Akhtar Hussein Qutubuldin
Ahmed as claimed by the Dubai police. Hussein's passport details, available
with the Hindustan Times, show that it was issued from Delhi on June 4, 2003.
The passport number is E5516172. Sources in the intelligence agencies told HT
that if the Dubai police were convinced that Hussein was passing secrets
concerning India's nuclear programme to a foreign power, they should have
approached the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
